2Ti 1:8  Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but endure hardship with the gospel according to the power of God,  9  who having saved us, and having called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time itself,

The Mamertine Prison, was a prison that was a place for the common criminal, and many were ashamed of him and his chains, and no longer wished to be associated with him; lest it soil their good names in society. But Paul encourages them to not be ashamed and to endure the hardship of that.
