The Sea of Galilee was, and still is, a most dangerous place
to sail on. It is 5 or 600 feet below sea level and has mountains around it so
the wind can come in without any notice and the calm sea can become a raging
tempest instantly. Even with today’s technology some people refuse to sail
on it.
The disciples when out with Jesus for a night crossing of
the Sea of Galilee when a great tempest came up and Jesus was sleeping. Most of
the time when someone next to you is calm enough to sleep in a panic situation
you just want to wake them and say, “don’t you even care that we are going to
die?!” My wife was on a flight once that was very, very rough, they had to wear
their seat belts for most of the flight. It got rougher and rougher, and then
she saw the server reach for the microphone with great difficulty because it
was to rough to grab it. My wife knew the announcement would be, “we are going
down!” but instead it was, “we will be serving drinks in just a few minutes.” My wife said she was sure they were going
down.
Mar 4:35 On that day, when evening had come, he said
to them, "Let us go across to the other
side."
Mar 4:36 And leaving the crowd, they took him with
them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him.
Mar 4:37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves
were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling.
Mar 4:38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the
cushion. And they woke him and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care that
we are perishing?"
Mar 4:39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to
the sea, "Peace! Be still!" And the
wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
Mar 4:40 He said to them, "Why
are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?"
Mar 4:41 And they were filled with great fear and said
to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey
him?"
