Jer 3:8 She saw that
for all the adulteries of that faithless one, Israel, I had sent her away with
a decree of divorce. Yet her treacherous sister Judah did not fear, but she too
went and played the whore.
Jer 3:9 Because she
took her whoredom lightly, she polluted the land, committing adultery with
stone and tree.
God is talking about His relationship with His chosen people
and is using a metaphor of people’s relationship to each other in marriage. The
most intimate of all human relationships is to our mates. Our relationships
here, on earth, are in the created order, and God’s relationship to His people is eternal.
