Humans are not allowed to see the
face of God. The Scriptures warn that no person can see God and live. We
remember Moses’ request when he ascended the holy mountain of God. Moses had
been an eye witness of astonishing miracles. He had heard the voice of God
speaking to him out of the burning bush. He had witnessed the river Nile turn
into blood. He had tasted manna from heaven and had gazed upon the pillar of
cloud and the pillar of fire. He had seen the chariots of Pharaoh covered be
the Red Sea. Still he was not satisfied. He wanted more. He craved the ultimate
spiritual experience. He ask God on the mountain, “Let me see your face. Show
me your glory.” The request was denied.
Exo 33:19 And he said, "I will make all my
goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name 'The LORD.' And I
will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will
show mercy.
Exo 33:20 But," he said, "you cannot see my
face, for man shall not see me and live."
Exo 33:21 And the LORD said, "Behold, there is a
place by me where you shall stand on the rock,
Exo 33:22 and while my glory passes by I will put you
in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed
by.
Exo 33:23 Then I will take away my hand, and you shall
see my back, but my face shall not be seen."
