2Sa 6:6 And
when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the
ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled.
2Sa 6:7 And the anger
of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of
his error, and he died there beside the ark of God.
The oxen stumbled and Uzzah thought the ark might fall off
of the cart, so he put out his hand to hold the ark from falling off. You may
say that was a noble thing to do, I mean God should be thankful that Uzzah was
there to stop the ark from falling to the mud below. But, no, God strikes him
down and he died there beside the ark of God.
The people had been told (including Uzzah) not to ever touch
the ark they had also been told how to move the ark, and it was never on a
cart!
Uzzah assumed that his hand was more holy than the mud below;
he did not understand what holy was! The ark is where God was! It was too holy for
Uzzah to touch it.
